Narrative

Looking down at my desk, I pick up a little white cardboard cuboid, with the label: ILFORD HP5 PLUS. I bring it to eyelevel, lifting it with only my thumb and index finger. As I do this, the film canister makes a rattling sound, shifting to either side of its container. Holding it in front of me, I reflect on why this object has so much value.

To start, it is nothing special in its current form, it’s pretty standard 35mm film. In fact, I have over a dozen more of these little boxes all around my room. However, what makes this item so particularly unique is its potential for metamorphosis. It has the ability to frame any particular moment in time –in just about any setting– in its grainy, black-and-white medium. With 400 ISO, it is versatile and adaptable to most lighting situations. To me, it is a timeless intermediary to capture both art and memories.
